I have learned a lot from Tim Keller, pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian in Manhattan, NY.  One of the most helpful things I’ve learned from Keller is with regard to preaching Christ and the gospel from every text.  Keller recently wrote a piece on preaching on The Gospel Coalition Blog titled Preachers-Only Aren’t Good Preachers.  Below is a quote from the post:

“If you put in too much time in your study on your sermon you put in too little time being out with people as a shepherd and a leader. Ironically, this will make you a poorer preacher. It is only through doing people-work that you become the preacher you need to be–someone who knows sin, how the heart works, what people’s struggles are, and so on. Pastoral care and leadership (along with private prayer) are to a great degree sermon preparation. More accurately, it is preparing the preacher, not just the sermon. Through pastoral care and leadership you grow from being a Bible commentator into a flesh and blood preacher.”

If you are a pastor or an aspiring pastor, I’d encourage you to read and listen to anything you can by Keller regarding preaching.  Start with the article mentioned above, but for the real bang, go out and try to find the lecture series he gave at Gordon Conwell titled Preaching to the Heart.  It is worth every penny you might have to pay. (Sorry, I couldn’t locate the lectures online.  If someone knows where to find them, please add a link in the comments section).

This Sunday morning I will be preaching at Summit Community Church here in O’Fallon.  I will be preaching from Genesis 27:30-46.  I am both excited and challenged by this passage.

After a solid Sunday afternoon nap, I’ll then be treking up to Hannibal to preach at Believer’s Church at 6pm on the topic of Why We Plant Churches.  If you live in the Hannibal area or feel like making a road trip, BC-Hannibal meets at 1101 Broadway in the First Christian Church building.

Two Sundays ago, I had the honor of preaching at Believers Church up in Hannibal, Missouri.  I preached from 2 Corinthians 5:21 on the topic of Identity in Christ.  The basic premise was that there are two sides of the gospel and that we tend to often emphasize one while minimizing the other.  My point in it all is that the gospel is not just about who God is and what he’s done – it is that to be sure, but it’s also more than that.  The gospel is about who God is, what he’s done, and who we are – as Christians – because of it.

This Sunday evening I have the honor of being a guest preacher up Highway 61 in Hannibal, Missouri at Believer’s Church, a fellow A29 church.  This will be the second time that I’ve had the opportunity to preach at Believer’s Church and they’ve got me on the books to visit again towards the end of next month as well.

I’ll be preaching on “Identity in Christ” from 2 Corinthians 5:21 this week.  Believer’s Church meets at 6pm on Sunday evenings at 1101 Broadway, Hannibal, MO.

I had the privilege of preaching at Summit Community Church two weeks ago on the myth that under grace, we are not to judge others.  The point of the sermon was to explore how, as Christians, we are not to judge those outside the body of Christ but for those inside the body, we are not to be slow to call sin “sin.”
