Preparing for Worship – 7.4.2010

(Post by Matt Grant, 2 Pillars Worship Leader)

This week I wanted to send everyone this Sundays complete music set list with links to videos so you can spend time on your own listening and growing in the songs we sing at 2 Pillars. Our goal is not perfection in worship, for which I know our earthly bodies can’t attain. Nor is it so we can film a super sweet worship video and post on our site so everyone knows how much more awesome-er we are then them at worshiping. Even though, we may be pretty rad, that’s just not the case. It could be that we just want you to fall in love with Jesus and sing your hearts out in your homes and at church on Sundays. That just might be it……

Included below are videos of the songs we’ll be doing this Sunday and the names of the artist involved. At the end of the post, there is also a PDF linked with the lyrics to each of the songs.  I do this in case you want to find more music from the artist. There are tons of great songwriters and bands out there once you get passed the “Christian Top 40″ found on K-LOVE.

And…without further adieu…..

“The Earth is Yours” – Gungor

“What Wondrous Love is this” – Ex Nihilo

“Jesus, You are Worthy” – Benton Brown

“Death in his Grave” – John Mark McMillan

“My Jesus, I Love Thee” by Page CXVI

No video for this one, but you can click over to the Page CXVI MySpace page and give it a listen.

“Skeleton Bones” by John Mark McMillan

Bock on Acts 2:42-47

This week in our Sunday gathering we’ll be covering the oft cited beginnings of the church from Acts 2:42-47.  The following is a challenging and helpful summary of this passage by commentator Darrell Bock (BECNT):

Everything about the Gospels and Acts tells us that God’s people are to take the initiative to show community and serve those around them. Much in Western culture drives us to an individualism that undercuts this development of community. We are taught to have things our own way and that being able to have our individual needs catered to is how to measure the success of an organization. In our culture, our individual needs and rights come before any needs of the group. The biblical picture is not of what someone receives from the church, although one does receive a great deal, but of what one gives and how one contributes to it. The portrait of the early church in Acts shows that community and the welfare of the group were a priority. In the case of this earliest community, the believer’s preaching was matched by their community, making a powerful testimony for their mission. When the early church said that God cared, the care they gave their own demonstrated this.

A Picture of Gospel Community

Jeff Vanderstelt is the VP of Acts 29 and leads Soma Communities out in Tacoma Washington.  Jeff’s teaching on Missional Communities has influenced and helped shape a lot of my own thinking on Gospel Communities.  Take a look at this short video for a glimpse of what a community centered around the gospel can look like.
